7 things about a blocked nose nobody tells you before surgery

Most people blame the bent wall down the middle. Here’s what’s actually narrowing a nose, and the ten second test for the part nobody checks.

Drawing of a nose from the side: the bent wall in the middle, the soft valve at the front.1

There are two narrow spots. Only one gets checked.

The septum is the wall down the middle, bone and cartilage, and surgery is the only thing that moves it.

The nasal valve is the soft part at the front where the nose meets the cheek.

It’s the narrowest point in the whole airway.

Nobody has ever breathed evenly through both nostrils.

They take turns. One side does more of the work, then a couple of hours later they swap.

In a study that tracked 33 people for a full day, every single one swapped sides, about every two hours awake and every four and a half asleep.

Most people never notice, because there’s nothing to notice.

News-style picture: a quarter of failed nose surgeries fail for the same reason.3

A quarter of failed nose surgeries fail for the same reason.

In a review of septoplasties that didn’t work, the valve was behind 25.6% of the failures, second only to the surgery being incomplete.

Surgeons write that it stays underdiagnosed and should be considered in everyone with a bent septum before the operation.

Before. Not after.

An old footy photo with a busted nose in it.4

Most people’s septum is bent. Most never notice.

Mayo Clinic Health System says about 70 to 80% of people have a septal deviation an examiner can see, and in many of them it causes no trouble at all.

So a bend doesn’t explain a blocked nose on its own.

It just gets the blame, because it’s the bit with a name.

One side of a bed at 3am, head turned to the side it is always turned to.5

The longest surgery wait in the country is this one.

320 days is the median public wait for a septoplasty, the longest of the twenty five most common operations.

And the clock only starts once you’re already on the list.

Two fingers pulling the cheek out and away from the nose, in a parked car.6

A strip cannot fix a deviated septum.

Say it plainly, because every article about this says it and it stops people right there.

Nothing you wear on the outside moves bone and cartilage.

What it can do is hold the soft part at the front open, which is a different narrow spot, and the one you’ve never had looked at.

The test takes ten seconds and costs nothing.

Two fingers flat on the cheek, pull gently out and away from the nose, breathe in. Clearly easier? The front is worth a look.

It’s called Cottle’s manoeuvre, it doesn’t diagnose anything, and it’s free.

A strip does that same pull for you, hands free, all night.

That’s Airflow+ Sport. A$35 for 30. Built to stay on when you sweat.

I still get cave ins using these, BUT they sure do increase airflow!Mitch Merriman, Toowoomba · sample pack

I have a deviated septum and this helps open up my nose so I can breath properly while out on runs and out on the dirtbike, highly recommendBrayden Shield, Melbourne · Airflow+ Sport
Had trouble for a long time with breathing (broken nose a time or two from football). These make it much easier to get oxygen in.Mark, Brisbane · Airflow+ Sport
I purchased these honestly being quite skeptical that it would do anything and nasal strips are a fad. I was wrong.Dawson, Toowoomba · Airflow+ Sport
