The other narrow spot: what nobody checks before septum surgery.

Most blocked noses get blamed on the bent wall down the middle. There are two narrow spots in a nose, and there’s a ten second test for the one nobody looks at.

Two fingers pulling the cheek out and away from the nose, in a parked car.

Nobody ever checked the front of it.

You’ve said it for years. Deviated septum. A doctor told you once, or you worked it out yourself after you broke it at footy.

Either way the story stopped there.

You sleep on one side so the good nostril is on top. You know which one is open before you’re properly awake. You gave up on the other one a long time ago.

You’ve been blaming the bit with a name.

It has a name. The nasal valve.

There are two narrow spots in a nose, not one.

The septum is the wall down the middle. Bone and cartilage. If it’s bent, it’s bent, and the only thing that moves it is an operation.

The nasal valve is the soft part at the front, two or three centimetres in, where the nose meets the cheek. It isn’t bone. It’s the narrowest part of the whole airway, and it makes more than two thirds of the resistance your nose puts up.

Soft means it moves. Pull hard on a breath, sniff, or push through a set, and the side wall folds inward.

People who’ve had it all their lives have a word for it. They call it a cave-in.

What it’s costing, and it isn’t just sleep.

A septoplasty is the operation that straightens the septum. In the public system the median wait is 320 days. That’s the longest of the twenty five most common operations in this country.

And the clock only starts once you’re already on the list. Getting in front of the specialist who puts you there is a separate queue.

Privately it’s roughly $2,500 in specialist fees, about $650 out of pocket with cover, and up to $6,000 all up.

That’s a long time to only be using one side.

Why nothing you’ve tried has worked.

Sprays help swelling. They do nothing to a bent wall or a soft one.

Chemist strips are the right idea, built wrong. They let go the moment you sweat.

Sleeping on one side is a position, not a fix, and for a lot of people it’s the advice they were sent home with.

Then there’s the last one, which isn’t a fix at all: deciding it’s structural and stopping there.

Every one of them is aimed at the middle of your nose. The narrow bit is at the front.

The ten second test, and what it can’t tell you.

Two fingers flat on your cheek, beside your nose. Pull the cheek gently out and away. Not up, and don’t press on the nose itself. Breathe in.

If that breath is clearly easier, the soft part at the front is worth a look. Do each side on its own. One side only is common.

It’s called Cottle’s manoeuvre, and here’s the honest part: it doesn’t diagnose anything. A 2018 study found it has never been properly validated, and people who tested positive did no better a year after surgery than people who didn’t.

It tells you one thing. Which of the two narrow spots you’ve never had looked at.

The fix, and what it can’t do.

A nasal strip cannot move a bent septum.

Nothing you wear on the outside can. Anything that tells you different is lying to you.

What it does is the same job as those two fingers, hands free, all night. The spring band lifts the outside of the nose and holds the soft part at the front open. Mechanical. No drugs. It works the second it’s on.

Airflow+ Sport is the one built to stay on through sweat, which is the whole reason it exists. A$35 for 30. Black.

And to be straight about it: it reduces the collapse, it doesn’t abolish it. One of our own customers still gets cave-ins at full effort and says so below.

Surgery is still the right answer for some people. A trial of 378 adults found septoplasty beat sprays for moderate to severe blockage. Nobody here is telling you to cancel anything.

There are two narrow spots, and only one of them has ever been looked at.

I have a deviated septum and this helps open up my nose so I can breath properly while out on runs and out on the dirtbike, highly recommendBrayden Shield, Melbourne · Airflow+ Sport
Had trouble for a long time with breathing (broken nose a time or two from football). These make it much easier to get oxygen in.Mark, Brisbane · Airflow+ Sport
I purchased these honestly being quite skeptical that it would do anything and nasal strips are a fad. I was wrong.Dawson, Toowoomba · Airflow+ Sport
I still get cave ins using these, BUT they sure do increase airflow!Mitch Merriman, Toowoomba · sample pack
